Rogelio Vega Cuevas is another remarkable Rosarito native whose accomplishments serve as an inspiration to the community. At just 17, he boasts an impressive swimming career with multiple medals at state and national championships.
Vega Cuevas discovered his passion for swimming at age five when his mother took him and his brother to the high-performance aquatic center in the Reforma neighborhood. Fascinated by the competitive program, he started swimming a year later.
“At first, I just wanted to learn to swim, but soon my brother and I were both drawn to it,” he shared.
By age six, he was already competing in his first municipal and state championships, achieving impressive results under the guidance of his first coach, Giovani Gil Mena, whom he holds in high regard.
His dedication continued to grow, and by 11, he nearly reached a national qualifying time. At 12, he met the mark, launching his participation in national events, where he soon began winning medals.
Since age 13, Vega Cuevas has consistently competed in national championships, bringing home medals in various events.
Although he has yet to reach international competitions, he works hard daily to realize his dream, inspired by teammates who have made it to global events.
“Some of my teammates are already competing internationally. We currently have one in Bahrain at a world school championship, and others have participated in Central American, South American, and junior world championships,” he explained.
Vega Cuevas will soon compete in a national championship, where he will race in backstroke and freestyle events. Reflecting on his journey, he encouraged other young people to try sports as a way to build healthy habits and personal growth.
“Maybe not swimming, but find a sport you enjoy. Try something new, don’t just stay at home. Hanging out with friends is fine, but also make time for yourself, to keep away from bad habits,” concluded Vega Cuevas, who is currently a high school junior at Instituto Santillana del Mar.
