The Pro-Municipality Committee hosted a special gala dinner at the Casablanca Hall of the Rosarito Beach Hotel to raise funds for the 30th-anniversary celebration of Rosarito’s municipalization.
Nancy Hernández, president of the committee, expressed her gratitude to attendees for supporting this noble cause. She highlighted that the celebration of municipalization represents a milestone that changed the course of the community.
Hernández reminded attendees that this initiative began with the efforts of the Pro-Municipality Committee, a group of citizens from all social classes united to support Rosarito families in seeking the city’s autonomy.
Hugo Antonio Torres (Ramírez) paid tribute to his father, the late Hugo Eduardo Torres (Chabert), the founder of the Pro-Municipality Committee.
He emphasized Mr. Torres deep commitment to the welfare of Rosarito and its residents, recalling how, faced with a lack of public services, limited governmental support, and widespread indifference from municipal and state leaders of the time, he decided to take action.
Mr. Torres witnessed how resources meant for Rosarito’s progress were diverted for the benefit of neighboring Tijuana, prompting him to step forward to reverse the situation.
Mr. Torres’ son recounted the origins of the organization, noting that with the support of the Madrugadores Group of Playas de Rosarito, the Pro-Municipality Committee was formally established on March 3, 1983. This committee was comprised of men and women deeply committed to social causes and convinced that the community had both the human potential and financial solvency, derived from its own resources, to govern itself and thrive.
“My father never doubted the potential of our community — its tourist vocation, its cuisine, its artists, the tireless work of its residents, their nobility, strategic location, and above all, the love he had for this community,” expressed Mr. Torres.
He concluded by urging current members of the Pro-Municipality Committee to hold fast to their vision of a “Horizon of Possibilities,” to resist divisions that pave the way for wrongdoing, allow corruption to triumph, and jeopardize the dream of independence.
