The Rosarito-Ensenada Cycling Tour is more than a sporting event; it generates economic activity and promotes a positive image for family tourism, according to the event’s founder, Guillermo Rodríguez.
He emphasized that the event has been held for 44 years and continues to be a major contributor to the region.
Mr. Rodríguez called on the local government of Rosarito’s 10th City Council to support this major event, highlighting its role in promoting tourism and creating jobs, as well as its economic benefits.
“People often think the promoter makes a lot of money, but they forget that it’s not about the promoter—it’s about the city of Rosarito, Ensenada, and the entire tourist corridor,” he said.
“Hotels, toll booths, gas stations, restaurants, and stores benefit, as thousands of people attend. On average, each cyclist is accompanied by three people, and since it’s a family-friendly event, all of this results in a significant economic boost.”
He also noted that thanks to the State Secretary of Tourism, the autumn edition of the event was restored after dialogue with the local government.
“The renewed relationship with local authorities helped resolve an unjust accusation that we weren’t paying taxes, which is untrue,” he said. “We’ve always paid taxes.
“What happens is that each administration invents new taxes, and last time, we were informed of a new tax just one day before the event. They classified us as a public spectacle, but we’re a sporting event for cyclists.”
He stated that organization pays for permits, street closures, and police protection in both Rosarito and Ensenada. Additionally, if they make a profit, they pay a 35% income tax (ISR).
“We’re not an endless source of income, and we barely break even,” he said.
