Voluntariado Rosarito and the nonprofit organization Huellitas Enjambre were recognized for their efforts to protect and care for abandoned animals. Both groups have also played an active role at the city’s Animal Control facility, promoting pet adoptions and organizing socialization walks for dogs housed at the municipal shelter.

Mayor Rocío Adame Muñoz presented the awards during the city’s first Animal Welfare Day, held at City Hall, where residents had access to rabies vaccinations, flea and tick treatments, and pet adoption opportunities.

“It is important to recognize the work carried out by civil organizations that willingly address issues many people prefer not to see,” the mayor said.

Liz López, spokesperson for Voluntariado Rosarito, thanked the current municipal administration for its willingness to collaborate with nonprofit organizations by providing space and support for initiatives that promote responsible pet ownership.

At the same time, she noted that significant challenges remain, including the need for increased funding, more spay-and-neuter campaigns, and stronger efforts to prevent animal cruelty.

The animal welfare advocate also expressed gratitude for the support provided by foreign donors, volunteer foster families, and veterinarian Fabián Flores, who has assisted in six cases referred by the State Attorney General’s Office.

Six pets were adopted during the event, giving the animals a second chance at finding permanent homes after being housed at the municipal shelter. However, 48 animals remain in the care of Animal Control awaiting adoption.

Meanwhile, newly appointed Animal Protection Director Alejandro Alonso Rodríguez announced that a free spay-and-neuter campaign is scheduled for late June, along with additional vaccination and pet adoption events.
