A second beach cleanup was carried out at El Bebé Beach, organized by local resident José Pérez and supported by community volunteers, the ZOFEMAT team, the nonprofit organization Kilómetro 1, content creator Ashlin Toots Marley, and the Department of Urban Services.
The goal of the initiative was to raise awareness about the growing problem of beach pollution—particularly the large amount of plastic waste found in the area—and to encourage citizen participation in actions aimed at protecting the natural environment.
Content creator José Pérez Martínez once again called on the community to get involved, expressing concern over the current condition of the beach and reaffirming the importance of coordinated efforts between government authorities and civil society.
During the event, Osmar San Miguel, a representative of Kilómetro 1, led an activity focused on identifying contaminants in the sand. The results showed that microplastics are the main source of pollution and one of the most serious environmental threats in the area.
Pérez thanked all participants for their involvement, but emphasized that “the real problem begins uphill, in the neighborhoods, where irresponsible citizens fail to dispose of their trash properly.”
According to ZOFEMAT, more than 34 tons of trash were collected by residents and authorities during the two cleanup events.
The cleanup operations were led by ZOFEMAT with the support of the Department of Urban Services. Both agencies provided operational, preventive and safety assistance, as well as conducting a prior assessment of the area to minimize risks during the cleanup activities.
