Rosarito’s opera scene continues to gain recognition for its credibility, strong academic foundation, and strategic location—putting the city on track to become a new hub for cultural tourism in Mexico.

That’s the vision shared by baritone and voice teacher Javier Carrillo Reséndiz, general coordinator of vocal studies at CEART Rosarito and one of the organizers of the 2nd National Opera Gathering (ENOR 2025), taking place August 9 to 15.

Preparations are currently underway at full speed to coordinate travel, lodging, and programming for singers arriving from across the country. Repertoire assignments and full performance schedules are also being finalized, a process that demands careful planning and dedication.

“Originally, ENOR was conceived as a space for experienced opera singers—professionals with real careers, even teachers—because this is a discipline that requires deep preparation,” explained Carrillo Reséndiz. “The most important achievement is showing that we have singers with real professional caliber.”

Opera, he emphasized, stands apart from mainstream commercial art. “Opera singers don’t usually seek fame; we don’t aim for celebrity status—that’s the job of marketers. Most of us come from operatic careers, not the world of pop,” he added.

Rosarito’s opera community is inspired by Tijuana’s Ópera en la Calle, a grassroots movement with more than three decades of history. “We’d like to dream of becoming an opera capital someday, but there’s still a long way to go,” Carrillo said.

He noted that Rosarito’s location near the wine route, Mediterranean climate, and its proximity to culture-rich cities like Ensenada could help cultivate a broader cultural tourism experience that combines music, food, and wine.

ENOR 2025 will include several events open to the public, offering a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes process of opera—from staging and text interpretation to vocal projection and performance. The gathering will culminate with a seaside opera performance on August 16.
