The permanent driver’s license program, implemented under the administration of Jaime Bonilla Valdez, will now require renewal to remain valid.

This comes after Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda’s initiative, approved by the State Congress, which eliminates the concept of permanent licenses.

The reform amends the Vehicle Control Law, introducing a renewal process that aligns with other vehicle-related procedures, such as license plates, decals, and registration cards.

Starting this January, drivers who hold permanent licenses will need to update their information at revenue collection offices and pay a fee of approximately 700 pesos to complete the renewal process.

Failure to renew will result in the permanent license being converted into a standard license with a validity of three to five years.

The renewal deadline depends on the license’s original issue date. Drivers must check their license issuance date and complete the renewal within 90 days of reaching the five-year mark.

If this deadline is missed, the permanent license will automatically be replaced by one with a limited validity period.
