The Oaxacan community in Rosarito is substantial, which is why every year a small representation of this vibrant state’s culture is organized. This year’s event was led by traditional cook Sandra Mendoza, who has stood out for her contributions to showcasing Oaxacan culture.

The event, titled “La Guelaguetza” in Rosarito, was held for the first time at the Centro Estatal de las Artes on Saturday, Aug. 28.

Attendees enjoyed traditional Oaxacan cuisine, including tlayudas and mezcal, as well as a workshop on traditional chocolate and the making of beeswax candles.

The event featured artistic presentations from Ghyla Ozuna, a fashion show by designer Azul Alebrije showcasing traditional designs, and performances of traditional music and dance, such as the Flor de Piña, Las Totoperas, Jarabe Mixteco, Sones y Chilenas, and the traditional dance Chileatole.

Sandra Mendoza, the traditional cook, expressed gratitude for the support from the Centro Estatal de las Artes and noted that despite the event’s rapid promotion, the turnout was good.

She highlighted that many attendees engaged with the products of the exhibitors, which was one of the event’s goals—to promote the products of local entrepreneurs.
