In response to the increase in abandoned dogs and cats, state government will construct a second animal sanctuary in the northern part of Rosarito, aiming to also serve Tijuana.
This announcement was made to Ecos de Rosarito by Arturo Espinoza Jaramillo, Secretary of Infrastructure, Urban Development, and Territorial Planning (SIDURT).
The official stated that the animal sanctuary will house both rescued cats and dogs. “We are finalizing the investment package, and we hope to at least start the earthworks this year,” he said.
He said the land belongs to state government and is the closest to the populated area, though it will be more challenging to carry out the earthworks.
The site has been confirmed by Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda. Once completed, this will be the second animal sanctuary in Baja California, as the first one is located in Mexicali.
Espinoza Jaramillo did not specify the amount of resources that will be allocated, but emphasized that the confirmation of the site in Rosarito ais key.
“The willingness is there, which is the most important thing because with willingness comes the money” he said.
“This is what the governor has asked for in order to replicate what has already been done in Mexicali, a project initiated by the same governor.”
Construction designs are being reviewed to ensure the sanctuary can accommodate around 200 animals with potential for expansion.
