With high energy and enthusiasm, the 2025 Junior Lifeguard summer camp hosted by the Rosarito Fire Department’s Aquatic Rescue Division got underway this week, drawing dozens of children and teens eager to master the waves and learn what it takes to become a beach rescuer.

According to Fire Captain Joaquín Mercado de Santiago, this year’s camp goes far beyond water safety. Participants are receiving instruction from professionals in multiple fields, offering life skills that extend well beyond the shoreline.

A total of 91 young people enrolled in the program, which includes collaboration from various public agencies and subject matter experts.

Campers are being trained in first aid, marine biology, nutrition, and sports, while also receiving general knowledge courses designed to broaden their personal and educational development.

The program runs for five weeks, with training sessions held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from early morning until late afternoon at Central Beach, near the Lifeguard Towers and Fire Station One.

“This program is about more than just becoming a junior lifeguard,” said Captain Mercado. “It’s about shaping better citizens and giving them tools they’ll carry for life.”
