Luis Felipe Figueroa, the Coordinator of the Federal Maritime Land Zone Fund (ZOFEMAT), emphasized the efforts made by his team to keep Rosarito’s extensive coastline clean, from the Tijuana border to La Misión.
The team is composed of 16 workers dedicated to the maintenance, conservation, and cleaning of the entire shoreline, including beaches such as La Misión, Alisitos, El Campito, Kilometer 38, Playa Encantada, the central area beaches (the most visited), Playa El Bebé, Santa Mónica, and the beaches near the Tijuana border.
The ZOFEMAT team is solely responsible for beach maintenance, conservation, and cleaning, as surveillance duties have been transferred to the Ministry of Development and Urban Services under the current administration.
The team uses a beach-cleaning machine and four vehicles that work daily along the coastline. Although the beaches may appear dirty after a busy weekend, once ZOFEMAT crews start their shift, they don’t stop until they have covered all the beaches and removed all the trash they find along the way.
At the beginning of the week, the central area beaches were notably clean, thanks to the efforts of ZOFEMAT workers and the assistance of the beach-cleaning machine.
“I have to highlight the hard work of the team,” he said. “They are the ones putting in the effort on the beach; I’m just the supervisor. They are the ones who make a great effort to keep the beaches clean.
“They work every day, including weekends, with shifts in the morning and afternoon, and during the week from 7am to 3pm. We are responsible for the maintenance and conservation of the beach, and we have also been helping with surveillance tasks, but that’s not part of our duties.”
