ZOFEMAT is urging beachgoers to take greater responsibility for keeping Rosarito’s beaches clean and to use the trash cans provided along the shoreline.

Lázaro Adán Aldama López, coordinator of ZOFEMAT, said 40 new trash cans were recently installed at beaches in the downtown area, giving visitors convenient places to dispose of their waste.

“We continue asking people to be more conscious about taking care of the beach, since we have enough trash cans available. So far this August, we have collected 30 tons of trash,” Aldama said.

He added that cleanup efforts are continuing as Rosarito has experienced a significant increase in tourism in recent weeks.

Regarding beach patrols, Aldama said ZOFEMAT’s surveillance team conducts regular rounds, particularly after 6 p.m., to monitor beach bonfires.

Because the cleaning and maintenance staff is not large enough to adequately cover Rosarito’s entire coastline, surveillance personnel sometimes assist with these efforts.

“The surveillance staff is always attentive to needs as they arise, but they also help with maintenance because sometimes there aren’t enough conservation workers,” Aldama said.

He also reported a decrease in the number of beach bonfires compared with previous years. When people are found having a bonfire, ZOFEMAT personnel ask them to use a metal container to prevent burning debris and residue from contaminating the beach.
