Renovation work is underway on the public section of the iconic pier at Rosarito Beach Hotel, with privately funded improvements focused on strengthening the structure and enhancing safety for visitors.

Construction began last week and is progressing as planned, according to Hugo Antonio Torres Ramírez, chairman of the hotel’s board of directors. The work is expected to be completed by the end of August, in time for Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations.

“We’re rehabilitating a significant portion of the pier to improve safety for both tourists and local visitors,” Torres said. “The work areas have been fully secured above and below the pier to protect the public and prevent debris from entering the surrounding area.”

The project includes reinforcing the pier’s upper structure by installing new crossbeams, repairing damaged support elements and protecting the structure from marine corrosion.

Torres said crews are replacing structural crossbeams with heavy timber sourced from giant pine trees harvested in Washington state and British Columbia. The wood was selected for its strength and durability in the marine environment.

Workers are also removing corrosion from the pier’s steel supports before applying a specialized anti-corrosion treatment, marine-grade protective paint and a waterproof sealant designed to extend the lifespan of the structure.

“First, the corrosion is removed from the steel supports,” Torres said. “Then they receive a specialized anti-corrosion treatment, followed by marine-grade paint and a protective seal that helps block water and improve long-term durability.”

In addition to the pier improvements, Rosarito Beach Hotel is expanding its Café en el Muelle to provide additional indoor and outdoor seating.

Torres said the expansion is intended to accommodate growing visitor demand while offering more enclosed seating during the winter months, when many guests prefer to dine indoors.
