The roadway will be expanded to four lanes along a 2.6-kilometer stretch.
The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Urban Development and Territorial Reorganization (SIDURT) has begun preliminary work on the expansion of Real de Rosarito Boulevard, which will widen the roadway to four lanes.
The project had been in planning for several years but moved forward in August 2025 with the signing of a land donation agreement involving Ejido Mazatlán, the Rosarito City Government, and SIDURT.
The work includes the construction of two additional lanes along a 2.6-kilometer section of Real de Rosarito Boulevard. The improvements are expected to benefit more than 15,000 residents in neighborhoods including Costa Rica, Vizcaíno Residencial, Ampliación Plan Libertador, and Infonavit Real de Rosarito, while also improving access to major employment centers.
With only one lane in each direction, the roadway has struggled to keep pace with traffic demand as the surrounding area has grown rapidly in recent years, making the expansion a priority for municipal and state authorities.
Arturo Espinoza Jaramillo, head of SIDURT, said the project will expand the roadway to two travel lanes in each direction, along with shoulders, increasing capacity and improving safety for motorists.
The work includes the construction of hydraulic concrete lanes, stormwater infrastructure, curbs, and the installation of horizontal and vertical traffic signage.
The project represents an investment of 81.6 million pesos and is expected to benefit more than 50,000 residents.
Espinoza Jaramillo said the project is the result of coordination with the Playas de Rosarito City Government, which helped facilitate right-of-way clearance and the planning of complementary infrastructure improvements in the area.
“Thanks to the joint work with the municipal government, we were able to consolidate this project, which includes not only paving but also a comprehensive redesign that corrects the alignment connecting to Sharp/Hisense Boulevard, guaranteeing smooth connectivity for the population growth the municipality is experiencing,” the official said.
The Rosarito City Government also announced measures that will be implemented to maintain traffic flow during construction, which will be carried out in phases.
One direction of traffic will remain open while work is performed on the opposite side of the roadway. Once work on a section is completed, construction will shift to the other side, avoiding a full closure at any point during the project.
In addition, warning signs and traffic-control devices will be installed to minimize disruptions and maintain an orderly flow of traffic throughout construction.
“The Municipal Government urges residents to take precautions, allow additional travel time, and follow traffic signs and the instructions of construction personnel in order to avoid congestion and ensure the safety of motorists and workers,” the City Government said in a statement.
