“This is one way of the many offers and events we’re extending to our guests during our 100th year,” said Hugo Antonio Torres, president of the resort’s board of directors.
The resort’s anniversary promotion states that “from 1924 to 2024 we’ve been your home away from home,” and urges guests “not to miss this special opportunity to create your own memories at our historic hotel.”
What was then a 10-room roadhouse announced its grand opening on July 27, 1924. Now the Rosarito Beach Hotel & Spa, it has grown to Baja’s largest and best known beachfront resort, with 500 rooms and suites.
During that century, it has hosted millions of guests also who have created tens of millions of stories at the seaside resort, less than a scenic 20 south of the United States-Mexico border, and 30 miles from San Diego.
Once the resort was like a Hollywood South with guests including Rita Hayworth, Kim Novak, Orson Wells, Vincent Price, Kirk Douglas and many scores more. Many landed in small planes on the hotel’s private runway. Name a star of the era and they perhaps were there.
In recent years, the resort has added a café on the pier, museum, small chapel by the sea, renovated rooms and made many other changes in preparation for its centennial celebration and future.
The city of Rosarito was founded around the resort, and it is a centerpiece for what has become one of Baja’s most vibrant tourist regions. Many tourists later moved to the region, and Rosarito now has 15,000 to 20,000 expatriate residents who came for a day but stayed for a lifetime.
