In Rosarito, hundreds of abandoned dogs wander the streets. Some of these animals find places to stay and, if they’re lucky, are adopted.

This is the story of Estrella, a mixed-breed dog who arrived at the central fire station six months ago. Lifeguards and firefighters took her in while waiting for her owner to appear.

Unfortunately, no one came for her, so the firefighters adopted Estrella, making her an official member of their team.

Estrella is an extraordinary pet with qualities akin to those of a lifeguard, according to Aaron González, the coordinator of the Water Rescue Division and a captain.

He mentioned that there are two other adopted dogs at the Constitución station that keep the firefighters company, but Estrella’s case is unique.

She even participates in parades with the fire and lifeguard corps.

“She is a full-fledged lifeguard and firefighter,” he said. “She climbs the lifeguard tower on her own, rides the motorcycles, and hops on the truck. In fact, during a quad bike tour, she sits up front.

“She stays relaxed, watching the beach in her lifeguard role. We’ve even taken her on the jet ski with all necessary precautions, and she doesn’t get off.

“It’s truly amazing; she spends her time here with us and sleeps at the fire station,” said González.

Through this adoption, the firefighters aim to promote responsible pet ownership and make a special appeal for empathy towards animals.
