The Baja California Health Secretariat is encouraging men to seek medical evaluation if symptoms commonly associated with andropause begin affecting their daily lives, emphasizing that proper diagnosis can help identify underlying health conditions and improve long-term well-being.

Health Secretary Adrián Medina Amarillas said andropause is linked to a gradual decline in testosterone, a hormone essential to a variety of bodily functions. The condition may develop gradually beginning in a man’s 40s or 50s, although the onset and severity of symptoms vary from person to person.

Common physical symptoms include reduced sex drive, persistent fatigue, loss of muscle strength and muscle mass, lower energy levels and sleep disturbances. Men may also experience mood changes, irritability and difficulty concentrating.

Medina Amarillas stressed that these symptoms should not automatically be attributed to aging, as they can also indicate other medical conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, depression or cardiovascular disease. A medical evaluation is necessary to determine the underlying cause and establish the most appropriate treatment.

Although declining testosterone is considered a natural part of aging, he said it should not be ignored when it interferes with everyday activities or affects a person’s physical or emotional well-being. Healthcare providers can perform a comprehensive clinical evaluation and, when appropriate, order additional tests to guide treatment decisions.

The Health Secretariat continues to promote preventive care aimed at improving men’s overall health, encouraging regular medical checkups and early detection of conditions that may affect hormonal health and general wellness.

Officials also recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting adequate sleep, managing stress, avoiding tobacco use and limiting alcohol consumption.

Men experiencing persistent symptoms are encouraged to consult a healthcare provider rather than assuming the changes are simply a normal part of aging. The Health Secretariat said its medical facilities have trained personnel available to provide guidance, evaluation and treatment to support healthy aging and improve quality of life.
