Sunday cumbia dances have returned to Abelardo L. Rodríguez Park following the reopening of the newly renamed Centro Cultural Rosarito, bringing dozens of older adults back to one of the city’s most popular weekly social gatherings.
The free event takes place every Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the downtown park, where attendees gather to dance, socialize and enjoy an afternoon of live music and community.
Among those celebrating the return was Doña Nachita, a well-known community activist in downtown Rosarito. At 80 years old, she was back on the dance floor after months of waiting for the park to reopen, joining friends who had eagerly anticipated the return of the weekly tradition.
The dances had been temporarily relocated to the plaza outside City Hall while the park underwent renovations. However, the enclosed space offered poorer acoustics, and public transit routes, including the local calafias minibuses, did not stop near the municipal complex, making it difficult for many older adults without private transportation to attend.

Most participants come from local senior social clubs, though independent attendees also join the gatherings to spend an enjoyable afternoon dancing and visiting with friends.
The first Sunday back at the park drew an enthusiastic response, with many seniors welcoming the return of an activity that offers several hours of recreation, companionship and a chance to set aside the worries and physical challenges that often come with age.
The program is supported by the Municipal Secretariat of Culture through the Municipal Institute of Art and Culture, which has continued promoting the weekly dances during the current city administration.
