The world of professional wrestling and the sports community in Baja California, especially in Rosarito, are in mourning following the confirmation of the death of one of their most outstanding and beloved figures: El Tapatío.
Family members of Don Miguel Rivas confirmed the sad news of his passing. He was a patriarch and a symbol of perseverance, dedication, and passion for the sport—a man who, among his many achievements, maintained his mask throughout his career, remaining undefeated in numerous battles over his long tenure as a professional wrestler.
Although originally from the state of Jalisco (hence his wrestling name), El Tapatío made his home in Rosarito, a city he loved and where he nurtured the mystery behind his signature blue mask. He also played a key role in inspiring younger generations to embrace the passion for lucha libre.
Just a few days ago, the Rosarito-based wrestler attended an event as a special guest to support a new project promoting the sport, featuring a wrestling ring built at the Ernesto Ruffo Appel Sports Complex in Rosarito.
The charismatic fighter achieved significant victories throughout his career, leaving his mark in memorable battles against several renowned wrestlers of the 1970s and 1980s—until the relentless Cronos (the God of Time) finally caught up with him at the age of 74.
Beyond his achievements in the ring, El Tapatío was also a wrestling coach and served as the president of the Rosarito Boxing, Lucha Libre, and Mixed Martial Arts Commission.
In recognition of his legacy and contributions to the sport, he was honored with the Civic Merit Award by the municipal government in 2023.
Rest in peace, Don Miguel Rivas, El Tapatío.
