The Secretary of Culture of the State has declared the Rosarito Beach Hotel a cultural heritage site of Baja California, following its centennial celebration in July.

This declaration was officially published in the State Official Journal on Friday, Sept. 13.

The Rosarito Beach Hotel thus becomes the first cultural heritage site declared in this municipality, thanks to the request made byHugo Torres Chabert, owner of the property, which was supported by Hugo Antonio Torres, president of the hotel’s board of directors the past four years, and granted by Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda.

Alma Delia Ábrego Ceballos, Secretary of Culture, reported that the current state administration has made 10 declarations of cultural heritage that preserve our identity and foster a sense of belonging.

“With this declaration, Baja California can boast of a history that is still unfolding, helping us to understand the past, comprehend the present, and envision the future of our region,” stated the Secretary.

“By making this declaration, we preserve the cultural value of this iconic establishment, which will support the successful family business that has characterized it since the 1920s,” affirmed María Eugenia Castillo, a cultural heritage specialist.

“It is important to note that the preservation of the Rosarito Beach Hotel is significant for the history of the border region due to its architectural design, its association with notable events and figures, and its state of preservation.”

Many Hollywood and Mexican celebrities, politicians, businessmen, and numerous local and foreign tourists have stayed at this hotel. Despite the expansion of its facilities over time, it retains much of its original structure, adding historical value.

The cultural agency acknowledges the care and sensitivity of the owners in preserving artworks, antique furniture, murals, and authentic finishes on walls, ceilings, and openings that make the Rosarito Beach Hotel a source of pride for Baja Californians.

Casa Chabert, along with the hotel, stands as an excellent and beautiful testament to the contributions of the Barbachano family to the progress of our state.
