And now, as promised…
Many years ago, around 1992, a family from neighboring Tijuana was spending time on our beaches, right in front of the hotel. They had come to celebrate one of the last Sundays of summer on our coast, and while the adults were drinking and snacking on the beach, the children were jumping and splashing in the waves. Everyone was enjoying themselves… but suddenly, the older girl’s screams were heard from the water: “Help!! I can’t find Maríaaaa!!! Help!!!”
María, a girl of about 6 or 7 years old, who had been seen jumping the waves just seconds earlier, was no longer visible. The adults, hearing the cries for help, ran towards the waves. Five adults organized themselves to get the rest of the children out of the sea and search for María. María’s father, desperate, asked his friend to go get help from the hotel. The friend ran for help and found Zenobio, one of our staff members trained in first aid, and Areli, a paramedic colleague.
As the three ran towards the beach, María’s father was already carrying the unconscious girl in his arms. Quickly, Zenobio and Areli performed the necessary techniques to revive her, but unfortunately, they couldn’t. The firefighters arrived immediately after and also couldn’t revive her. María had drowned.
Two years later, in 1994, unusual events began to be witnessed by the hotel staff and guests. Right in the area facing the beach where María had been before going into the waves, she could be heard singing “lara lala laaaa aaaa.” She has also been seen wandering the gardens in front of the beach and playing on the swings. Those who have seen her describe her as a girl between 6 and 7 years old, wearing a pale pink dress. One day, guests in room 211 woke up to see the girl from their window. So, if you ever visit and stay in room 211, don’t worry. María just wants to play.
Hotel Rosarito celebrates its first hundred years. It is the oldest and largest hotel in Baja California.
