In the Baja California community of Primo Tapia, residents have come together to help an elderly couple fulfill a dream decades in the making — a wedding, complete with a white dress, despite serious health and financial challenges.
María de los Ángeles Peralta and José Gildardo Sosa met years ago in a nursing home in Ensenada. Life’s hardships eventually led them to the Colinas del Coronel neighborhood of Primo Tapia, where they now live in a small borrowed room with just the essentials: a stove, a bed, and a bathroom.
For Doña Angelita, as she is affectionately known, the wish to walk down the aisle in a white gown has never faded. Both she and Don José live with diabetes; complications from the disease resulted in the loss of both her legs. Don José now serves as her primary caregiver, helping her move, assisting with personal care, and keeping their modest home in order.
Their story has touched the hearts of neighbors, who responded with donations of food, cleaning supplies, and even a wedding dress. The local delegation is covering the legal paperwork to ensure the civil ceremony takes place on August 8.
