In a landmark moment for Mexican sports, diver Randall Willars Valdez from Rosarito seized the gold medal in the men’s 10-meter platform at the Diving World Cup in Guadalajara—marking the first time Mexico has defeated China in this event at a global competition.
Willars, who narrowly missed the podium at the 2024 Paris Olympics after a lapse in concentration during his signature dive, returned to competition with renewed focus and determination. Backed by a passionate home crowd, he delivered a flawless execution of the forward 4½ somersaults in pike position—one of the most difficult dives in the sport.
His performance earned a remarkable score of 547.70 points, leaving behind China’s Zifeng Zhu (468.65) and Zilong Cheng (463.80), and securing a decisive victory.
The dive, which has since gone viral on social media, not only placed Willars at the top of the podium but also made history—it’s the first time Mexico has ever claimed gold over China in the men’s 10-meter platform.
The upset was further underscored by another gold medal for Mexico, won by Osmar Olvera and Juan Manuel Celaya in the men’s 3-meter springboard synchronized event. Together, these victories disrupted China’s long-standing dominance in diving and highlighted Mexico’s rising strength in the sport.
With eyes now on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Mexico has sent a clear message: it is no longer just a contender—it’s a powerhouse.
