Salma Hefzibá Honorato Ruíz, a sixth-grade student from Rosarito, was recently recognized in Mexico City for her outstanding performance in a national oratory contest, where she was among the top 10 winners in the country. She was also the only representative from Baja California.

During the event, Magistrate Mónica Soto awarded Salma a gavel, symbolizing the power of voice and leadership.

“The magistrate told me: ‘Take this gavel, it represents the authority you have. When you strike its base on a table, it signifies your power to give others the floor in a discussion,’” Salma recalled.

A Champion with a Heart for Inclusion

Salma’s journey into advocacy began when she met Ramón, a deaf student who struggled to adapt in school. Moved by his challenges and determined to help, she and her teacher Alfredo Serrano Sansón turned to YouTube tutorials to learn basic sign language.

“At first, we just wanted to help him communicate, but soon, others joined in, and Ramón started feeling more confident. Now, he plays soccer and feels included,” Salma shared.

Her commitment to inclusion and equality was a key theme in her award-winning oratory.

Meeting Rosarito’s Mayor

Back in Rosarito, Mayor Rocío Adame welcomed Salma and offered words of encouragement:

“She told me that with my education and these experiences, I can achieve anything I set my mind to. That’s why, when I become a lawyer, I want to defend people,” Salma stated.

A Vision for Rosarito

When asked about her hopes for the city, Salma didn’t hesitate:

“I wish people wouldn’t litter or vandalize with graffiti. The other day, I saw some boys throwing water at a homeless person sleeping on the sidewalk. I think we need a shelter where these people can get help,” she expressed with a determined sparkle in her eyes.

At just eleven years old, Salma is already proving to be a voice for change, embodying leadership and compassion—qualities that promise a bright future.
