The beach beside the pier hosted the third edition of the Mexican Surf Open, where Johnny Corzo, Summer Sivori, Alfonso Aguilar, and Matías López emerged as champions. The tournament was organized by the Baja California State Surfing Association in coordination with the Baja California Sports and Physical Culture Institute.
For Corzo, the victory marked his second consecutive title in the men’s shortboard category, while Sivori earned her first championship in the women’s shortboard division.
In bodyboarding, Alfonso Aguilar claimed the crown after defeating two-time champion Kalani Favela, and in the youth category, the top honor went to Matías López.
Alongside the surfing competition, a beach volleyball tournament drew more than 80 teams, strengthening community ties and creating a family-friendly atmosphere around the event.
“It was about waiting for the right waves. I stayed calm despite a shaky start and enjoyed the competition—that was key to winning back-to-back titles,” Corzo said. He added that he will compete next month in Puerto Rico as part of the world tour, aiming to climb the global rankings.
Sivori emphasized the physical and mental demands of her victory: “It was a great day, a reminder of why I love surfing. Mentally it was tough, I had to overcome injuries, but in the end everything came together.”
Aguilar, the new bodyboarding champion, noted the unique challenge of the discipline: “It’s harder because we depend on bigger waves, and this time we also had to adapt to the Pacific’s cold temperatures.”
Antonio Otañez, president of the State Surfing Association, thanked competitors, collaborators, and institutions for making the event possible. He confirmed that the fourth edition of the Mexican Surf Open will take place the first weekend of September 2026.
