In response to the growing problem of illegal dumping sites, Mauricio Aguirre Ruiz, director of Urban Services, has announced the reactivation of neighborhood watch groups to help monitor trouble spots throughout the city.
Aguirre Ruiz emphasized that close communication with neighborhood committees—especially through WhatsApp groups—has proven to be an essential tool in the fight against clandestine dumping.
“With the support of these community groups, we can monitor illegal dump sites much more effectively,” he stated.
Although some watch groups are already in place, Aguirre Ruiz stressed the importance of reactivating and coordinating them with municipal agencies such as Urban Services and the local police.
He acknowledged that penalties already exist for those who dump trash in public spaces, but noted that enforcement alone is not enough without stronger community engagement and stricter oversight.
Aguirre Ruiz also called for tougher sanctions, arguing that the current regulations have failed to significantly curb the issue.
He expressed confidence that a coordinated effort between citizens and the government will produce better results than isolated actions by either side.
