Luis Fernando González Vergara, Secretary of Urban Development and Services, announced that the Popotla Boulevard beautification project will be carried out in two phases.
The first phase is expected to be completed before the Tianguis Turístico event. It primarily involves implementing traffic measures to transform the road into a low-speed, pedestrian-friendly area.
The goal is to allow tourists to walk safely, making it easier for them to explore and appreciate the products displayed by local businesses.
“The first phase must be completed before April 15. We will implement roadworks and traffic measures to slow down traffic, improve crosswalks, signage, sculptures, median refurbishment, traffic lights, and speed reducers,” he explained.
The official recalled that one of the main requests made by merchants during consultation forums was to turn the road into a pedestrian-friendly, low-speed area, enabling visitors to walk around and admire their products and crafts.
The second phase, set to begin after Tianguis Turístico, will focus on expanding and improving pedestrian walkways, as well as additional beautification efforts along Popotla Boulevard.
“We will enhance all pedestrian walkways, making them wider and more accessible. Parking areas will be reorganized, and commercial spaces will be structured to prevent merchandise from obstructing public pathways, all in coordination with merchants to benefit the entire sector,” he added.
The total investment for both phases will be 28 million pesos from municipal funds.
Construction is set to begin on Monday, March 17.
