The Rosarito City Council plans to replace the palm trees removed from Benito Juárez Boulevard with decorative trees.

In the first phase, covering the stretch from the northern entrance to the tourist zone, the trees are expected to be planted before the Tianguis Turístico event.

Along with reforesting the central median, the project will include repairing streetlights, cleaning, and repainting road markings to enhance the boulevard’s appearance and create a welcoming image for visitors attending the Tianguis Turístico.

Mauricio Aguirre Ruiz, Director of Urban Services, explained that the palm trees and other trees removed from Boulevard Benito Juárez were either dry, damaged, or posed a risk of falling due to strong winds.

He noted that these palm trees were planted during the administration of Mirna Rincón Vargas but dried out because they were unsuitable for Rosarito’s Mediterranean climate.

They had been brought in from tropical regions and did not receive proper maintenance. Some were even at risk of collapsing and had to be cut down to prevent accidents.

The proposed replacement tree is known as the Tree of Love (árbol del amor), which features colorful flowers and striking leaves.

However, the Parks and Gardens Department is evaluating its viability, particularly regarding its roots, which could crack pavement, and its branches, which might obstruct visibility for drivers and pedestrians.

Another option under consideration is to continue planting Mediterranean-climate palm trees better suited to Rosarito.

Recently, the City Council received a donation of nearly 50 palm trees from a local nursery and is expecting at least 200 more in the coming months.
